Water Heater Making Noise? Popping, Rumbling & Banging Explained

By King's Cliff Plumbing ยท Updated 2026-11-02

Popping and rumbling

The most common noise. Sediment settles at the bottom of the tank; water trapped beneath it boils and pops as the burner fires. A professional flush removes the sediment, restores efficiency and quiets the heater. If the tank has been popping for years, the bottom may be damaged and replacement is safer.

Hissing or sizzling

Condensation dripping onto a hot burner, or a small tank leak. Check for water around the base โ€“ a leaking tank needs water heater replacement.

Banging or hammering

Usually water hammer in the supply pipes rather than the heater itself. Water hammer arrestors and proper strapping solve it.

Ticking or screeching

Ticking is pipes expanding with heat; screeching often means a partially closed inlet valve or a failing T&P relief valve that should be replaced. Hard water accelerates all of these problems โ€“ a water softener installation protects a new heater.
