Preventing Frozen Pipes in Tennessee: A Winter Plumbing Checklist
By King's Cliff Plumbing ยท Updated 2026-11-02
Which pipes freeze first
Pipes in crawlspaces, exterior walls, garages, attics and near foundation vents. Outdoor hose bibs and irrigation lines are also high risk during Tennessee cold snaps.
Winterization checklist
Disconnect hoses and cover spigots. Insulate exposed pipes with foam sleeves. Close crawlspace vents. Keep the thermostat at 55ยฐF or higher when away. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls. Let faucets drip during hard freezes.
If a pipe freezes
Keep the faucet open, apply gentle heat with a hair dryer or warm towels, never a torch. If no water returns or you see a split, shut off the main and call for frozen pipe repair.
Before the first freeze
Book a fall plumbing inspection. We'll check your water heater, insulate vulnerable lines and make sure shutoff valves work when you need them.
